On Science Based Targets Initiative’s removal of net zero commitment

Microsoft made ambitious commitments in 2020 to become carbon negative, water positive, zero waste, and to protect ecosystems – all by 2030. These commitments and their respective goals are rooted in science and are targeted at taking the necessary steps to protect our ecosystems and prevent the most severe impacts of climate change.

The Science Based Targets Initiative’s (SBTi) removal of the net zero target commitment from our profile in no way impacts Microsoft’s continued pursuit of our ambitious goals, which have not changed since we set them. Microsoft continues to work with SBTi and maintains a near-term SBTi-validated target that is aligned with the Paris Agreement.

We are firmly focused on achieving our 2030 goals and making the right long-term investments that support the sustainability of our business for decades to come. More information on our progress can be found in our annual environmental sustainability report.
