Reputation Institute’s 2012 CSR RepTrak™ 100 Report Ranks Microsoft #1 for Corporate Social Responsibility

Today, the Reputation Institute, one of the world’s leading reputation management consultant firms, released its 2012 CSR RepTrak™ 100 report naming the companies with the best reputations for corporate social responsibility around the world.

The study surveyed people around the world to measure their perceptions of companies’ behavior in three key areas: Citizenship, Governance and Workplace. Microsoft was ranked first in the category of Governance and also received the top ranking overall. The report was compiled from a survey of consumers in 15 countries who evaluated 100 global brands in response to the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: ‘Company’ is a good corporate citizen – it supports good causes and protects the environment.
  • Governance: ‘Company’ is a responsibly-run company – it behaves ethically and is open and transparent in its business dealings.
  • Workplace: ‘Company’ is an appealing place to work – it treats its employees well.

Being ranked the number one company in the Reputation Institute’s 2012 CSR RepTrak™ 100 report is a tremendous honor and one that we are very proud to receive. Citizenship is a priority on a global scale and at all levels of Microsoft, and over the past few months we’ve announced a number of major initiatives and milestones.
For instance, in September 2012, we refocused much of our Citizenship efforts around young people by launching Microsoft YouthSpark, a companywide initiative to connect 300 million youth with opportunities for education, employment and entrepreneurship. In partnership with governments, nonprofit organizations and businesses, we aim to close the opportunity divide – the gap between those have the access, skills and opportunities to be successful and those who do not.
In October 2012, we marked our 30th Employee Giving Campaign, a significant milestone that represents our employees’ passion for community involvement and making a positive difference in the world. Since 1983, our employees have raised $1 billion (inclusive of company match) for more than 31,000 nonprofits around the world. Microsoft employees in the U.S. have also volunteered more than 2 million hours of their time to causes they care about since we began our volunteer match program in 2005.
