Breaking bottlenecks: How AKOOL and Microsoft are shaping the future of AI video

Creating studio-quality video often is expensive, time-consuming, and limited to one language or market. Jeff Lu founded AI startup AKOOL because he wanted to eliminate such bottlenecks and make quality video as accessible as software

“I saw enterprises routinely stalling on video production,” Lu said. “Training, marketing, and global events were all hampered by geography, language, cost, and production logistics.”

AKOOL, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is an all-in-one AI video platform that streamlines professional content creation, delivering studio-quality results at scale without requiring weeks of prep.

Lu has always been fascinated by human–AI interaction, especially how faces and expressions can connect people across cultures. When he started AKOOL, he wanted to use AI to make video more expressive but quickly discovered that people were skeptical about whether AI could really capture the nuance of human communication. AKOOL overcame that by focusing on accuracy and realism, from natural lip-syncing to expressive avatars, and proving the value through real customer success stories.

“I’m most excited about AI making content personalized at scale,” Lu said. “Imagine every training video, ad, or class delivered in your own language, in a style that feels natural and human. We’re getting closer to content that truly feels made for you.”

In the coming year, Lu expects to see a breakthrough shift to live human–AI interaction. Instead of only creating pre-recorded content, he predicts that AI will enable real-time conversations, presentations, and customer engagement—making communication more dynamic and natural.

With the AI video market projected to grow exponentially in the next five years, Lu’s company, with the support of Microsoft for Startups, is attracting attention in the corporate world. In August, AKOOL was named the #1 fastest-growing private company in America on Inc. Magazine’s 2025 Inc. 5000 list.
