Tech Events | December 2017

With one month left in 2017, we’re hitting the ground running — join us at these top events in the Bay Area throughout December and help us give the year a proper sendoff:

December 1 — Spotlight on California Awards

This December 1, California Common Cause throws a spotlight our California achievements and the people who have made it possible. We will start with a reception (light food and drinks) at 6:30, followed by the awards ceremony at 7:00 pm.

December 4 — CSEdWeek Kickoff Event

Each year, we have kicked off Computer Science Education Week with a signature event—at the White House, opening the stock market, or with Canada’s prime minister. This year, the week’s official kick off will be in Silicon Valley.

We invite you to a special event to launch Computer Science Education Week 2017, to celebrate the accomplishments of the CS education community, and to make new announcements and pledges to K-12 computer science with a special focus on diversity.

December 6 — Using Data for a Collective Impact Refresh

In Project U-Turn’s 10th year of collective impact work, data has played a crucial part in the continuous improvement process. Both quantitative student data and qualitative stakeholder data helped refine the goals, structure, and collaborative processes aimed at stronger, equitable outcomes for a new three-year action plan. Project U-Turn presenters will present each point in the renewal process and have attendees reflect on how they would approach stages of change given their current community conditions and desired outcomes. Participants will leave with a series of concrete tools to guide similar processes for their collective impact work.

December 6 — Impact Hub SF Holiday Party

It’s the holiday season AND we have a new home in the Mission! Come celebrate with us, our members and our community.

December 7 — Talent Show & Auction to Benefit Diversity in Tech

Please spread the word: anyone in the Bay Area on December 7th is invited to attend, perform at, or donate to Techtonica’s Talent Show & Auction to support diversity in tech!

December 7 — “This Is Not For You” | A New Conversation About Oakland Gentrification

Oakland is changing fast, and young people are standing up to share their experiences of home when it matters the most. It’s important we hear them and amplify their stories, especially when their voices — and the voices of those most impacted by gentrification — all too often get lost in the noise.

December 8-10 — Tech + Politics + Society + You 2017 Hackathon

We’re working on programming, resources, and mentors with one thing in mind—to help participants collaborate with partners and experts to deliver projects that meaningfully address civic, social, and political problems. So we’ve created an application process to match participants with an issue that moves them—and caps attendance at 130 participants ready to be all in all weekend with each other, attending luminaries, and us.

December 9 — TeenTechSF Global Youth Summit @ Microsoft

Join us for an exciting morning at Microsoft with US & global speakers including Sid Espinosa, Microsoft Director of Civic Engagement and Palo Alto’s youngest mayor.

We’ll also be announcing the TeenTechSF World Pitch winners, plus hands-on workshops on coding, app creation, website development, Maker Movement activities, and professional development with LinkedIn, MakeSchool, Hour of Code, Technovation, and TeenTechSF student leadership.

Students will also participate in a networking session with tech leaders who want to support young tech innovators & civic entrepreneurs.

December 9 — 2017 California Solidarity Conference

At the 2017 California Solidarity Conference, 500 progressives from across the state will come together for an open exchange of ideas — discussing triumphs and challenges, and strategizing for our work ahead.

December 11-15 — Public Participation Training

Public involvement and community engagement are constantly changing. IAP2’s highly respected training program has evolved with changes in demographics, public attitudes and government.

Both new and experienced users and practitioners of community engagement will benefit from the structure, proven techniques and knowledge that you’ll get in this highly interactive training course.

December 13 — TechEquity Holiday Party

Join us on December 13th to celebrate the first year of TechEquity! This year we launched our membership program and have built a community of hundreds of tech workers, tech professionals, community organizers, public officials, and so many more who believe the tech-driven economy in the Bay Area can and should work for everyone. With your help, we won our first advocacy campaign, hosted eight events digging into policy issues, and launched a handful of programs. We couldn’t have done it without you!

December 15 — Civics Day

Join us at Generation Citizen’s end-of-semester event, Civics Day, and see young civic leadership in action.

Like a science fair for civics, middle and high school students from across the region gather to present their action projects on issues affecting their community to local officials and community leaders like you. It is an incredibly inspiring and powerful occasion to witness the impact of Generation Citizen’s program and youth-led change taking place in your own community.

December 16 — Free Citizenship Workshop

The mission of the SF Pathways to Citizenship Initiative is to increase the number of citizens in San Francisco by providing free, high-quality legal services through culturally and linguistically competent information and education.
