How Are You Celebrating Earth Day?

Microsoft is putting innovation to work to minimize our environmental impact. We are working with partners locally and globally to discover and implement new solutions to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future for our planet. Although Microsoft has been a carbon neutral company since 2012, sustainability is a choice we make every day. As we celebrate Earth Day here are a few ways you can learn more about, and even participate in, Microsoft’s sustainability programs and initiatives:

  • Smart Commuting: We have expanded our first/last mile shuttle service routes to accommodate our public transit rider’s needs. We have seen an increase in the number of employees electing to take CalTrain and alternative transit options over driving their vehicles to campus. This past month we installed new bike pumps and tool kits across our Valley locations for our bike enthusiasts and are partnering with Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition on their bike-pooling pilot program. We also now offer Zipcar service at the Mountain View campus, perfect for running those midday errands or heading to an off-site business meeting while removing the need to drive to work.

  • Eating Local: The Microsoft Silicon Valley Café asked employees for feedback on ways to improve its offerings and the resounding response was the desire for more locally sourced and organic selections. Now the Café provides seasonally varying offerings ranging from sustainably caught fish to locally grown produce. We even have compostable plates, cups, napkins, and silverware to reduce the amount of waste generated by from mealtime around campus.
