New Teachers are Made, Not Born

Since our early days in the University of Santa Cruz, California and our later incorporation as a national nonprofit organization in 2009, New Teacher Center has developed a proven model that accelerates teacher effectiveness, reduces teacher churn and improves student achievement.

Training_teachers_mentor_tabletop (2)In a society where first-year teachers experience a trial by fire, we believe that focusing on the fate of our newest educators in our school systems is the key to unlocking sustained success in teacher retention, development, quality and impact. After training close to 100,000 educators, resulting in nearly 7 million students receiving an education from more effective teachers, NTC’s work continues to make a difference for many levels of school system stakeholders: educators, mentors, coaches and school leaders—and their entire communities.

Our passion to make sure that all children have access to a great education—guided by the highest-quality teachers—is reinforced through the results we have seen in our backyard of the Bay Area. Whether it is through providing teachers working in underserved areas such as East Palo Alto with intensive mentoring to better equip them to teach literacy that is aligned with College and Career Readiness Standards, scaling teacher effectiveness through a competitive Investing in Innovation (i3) Scale Up grant in San Francisco Unified School District (CA), or helping teachers across East San Jose establish and sustain Professional Learning Communities to share best practices and generate cutting edge solutions for common classroom challenges, NTC understands that if we don’t set teachers up for success from the get-go, students will pay the price.

Microsoft has generously invested in our ability to make this possible by expanding our IT infrastructure so that we may offer our best-in-class model to every zip code in America. Whether it is through our tools used in our New Teacher Mentoring program, e-Mentoring for Student Success program, or our online resources for Social and Emotional Learning, investments like Microsoft’s allow us to expand the reach of our cause through building out our technology.

We believe that great teachers are made, not born and we owe it to each of them—and their students—to do a better job, starting now. If you agree that we have it within our power to help students learn and achieve more, we invite you to join us in this once in a lifetime opportunity.
