SF Gives Playbook – See How Your Company Can Help Build a Better Bay Area

Last year, Tipping Point’s CEO + Founder, Daniel Lurie joined forces with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and challenged the corporate community to raise $10M to fight poverty in the Bay Area. Twenty of the world’s most influential businesses, including Microsoft, rose to the challenge.

While the Bay Area is home to some of the world’s most prosperous and pioneering companies, 1 in 5 families in our region are too poor to meet their basic needs. SF Gives was designed to change that.

Initially envisioned as a fundraising campaign, SF Gives has evolved into a unique
ongoing collaboration between start-ups and companies imgreswith long tenure in the region. All members share a desire to integrate giving into the core of their work. Here’s a look at a few of the things we’ve accomplished so far:

  • We bring non-profit leaders to the table beside corporate leaders every month, and challenge ourselves and our for-profit counterparts to get employees volunteering and engaging more often with the non-profit community.
  • We’re currently piloting ways to address big challenges like the displacement of nonprofits from the city and transitioning more workers into living wage jobs.
  • Last week, we proudly released the SF Gives Playbook, a first-of-its-kind guide to impactful corporate philanthropy. In partnership with Boston Consulting Group, the SF Gives founding companies set out on a mission to benchmark corporate giving for the Bay Area. The results were compelling. Did you know that the tech community contributes 70% of all corporate philanthropic giving in the Bay Area? Or that even small shifts in the ways companies give back could quickly generate hundreds of millions of dollars for those in need?

As Daniel recently wrote, “Right now, our community has the resources, the networks, and the drive to supersize our poverty-fighting efforts — and we should. We should re-imagine philanthropy and the way poverty is addressed in every city.”
