On February 21, 2015, at the Code for America headquarters, Code for San Francisco and Microsoft are teaming up to bring CodeAcross San Francisco to the Bay Area. The event is timed with International Open Data Day to encourage open data policies by the world’s local, regional and national governments.

Code for San Francisco is the local chapter of the national civic technology non-profit Code for America. The group is made up of volunteer designers, developers, researchers, community organizers, and engaged citizens who work to make their local communities better places to live, work, and play.

“We’re really looking to use CodeAcross as an opportunity to start engaging local communities in San Francisco around civic issues,” said Jesse Biroscak, Captain of Code for San Francisco. “I want to emphasize the ‘start’ part of that – we’re looking at this event to act on our existing philosophy of building with people, not just for people.”

Anyone can join, whether helping for a couple of hours on ongoing challenges, bringing new ideas, or recruiting additional help for a specific project.

Biroscak emphasized that “by collaborating with our municipal and community partners during CodeAcross, we expect that projects won’t just be more useful for people, but that they’ll also be sustainable over the long term.”
