When I tried to uninstall the updates via add/remove programs it says that an error occured and that it may have already been removed do I want to delete it from add/remove programs? Any suggestions?

Microsoft automatic update ran on aug 15 at 11:10 PM; since then I have been unable to access internet: my ISP toldme this is a known issue and microsoft would be running an update to correct. Have they? And if so, how can I update my laptop since cannot access internet? Tried system recovery several times, but did not work. HELP!
