Skype tech ambassador empowers students with Geek Gurl Diaries site

Computer science teacher Carrie Anne Philbin has also written a “Adventures in Raspberry Pi,” a way of helping children get started in programming.

To help encourage more young women to become technology professionals, Carrie Anne Philbin, U.K.-based high school computer science teacher and Skype’s new Technology Brand Ambassador, started the Geek Gurl Diaries online community.

She developed a network of female tech role models who could “inspire younger generations to embrace their inner geek,” she says. At the center of Geek Gurl Diaries, she produces a YouTube series that showcases those female tech influencers.

So far, Philbin has used Skype video calling to interview women in Australia, New Zealand and the United States. She records and edits the videos herself, and puts them on YouTube so anyone can access them, she says.
