The Conversations blog goes behind the scenes of Cortana, the intelligent personal assistant that is part of the Windows Phone 8.1 update, through an interview with Marcus Ash, Microsoft’s Partner Group manager for Cortana.
“We had this wacky idea; what if you had an assistant embedded in your phone?” says Ash. “So we talked to human beings whose jobs it was to support others and make them more productive.”
Interviews with personal assistants revealed that they had to anticipate what their bosses needed and guide them through their workdays.
“We didn’t want just to create a voice-command system,” he said. “A true virtual assistant has to do things proactively. It has to have a sense of what I want to do. That’s a big differentiator.”
