Surface joins start-up LeanBox to revolutionize healthy vending

Microsoft Surface is helping Needham, Mass.-based startup LeanBox reimagine what the future of vending can be.

LeanBox dispenses healthy, fresh food items (many of which come from local startups themselves), in under a minute. The Surface tablet is the machine’s front-facing point of sale.

LeanBox co-founder Shea Coakley explains that the Surface gives the customer a nice, clean, easy checkout, while providing the company with the full Windows backbone needed for their robust backend inventory system. Their software utilizes classic Microsoft components such as SQL, .NET and ASP.Net for a dependable consumer platform.

What’s more, the next time you opt for a fresh wrap over those day-glo orange crunchies, you’re not only making a more healthful choice, you’re also benefiting a good cause.

For every $10 spent in a machine, LeanBox is donating the equivalent of the meal to a local food bank. For more about LeanBox and Microsoft, check out Microsoft New England.
