Each week, we bring you a new app recommendation from our colleagues. This week’s Staff App Pick comes from Doug Holland, a senior technology evangelist in Development and Platform Evangelism at Microsoft.
Back in January 2007, I was studying and training to get my private pilot’s license. One day, my instructor handed me a copy of the study guide for the Federal Aviation Administration’s knowledge exam from Aviation Supplies & Academics.
Today, my instructor might have simply had me download the Prepware Private Pilot apps from the Windows Store or Windows Phone Store. If you share my dream of learning to fly, then I encourage you to take that first step and find an instructor at a local flight school and download the two apps. The Prepware Private Pilot apps provide more than 1,000 questions, answers and explanations, ensuring that you’ll be well prepared when it is time to take your “written” test. When using the apps, you can choose to study a particular subject, take practice tests and then review the graded test.
As you progress in your training, you’ll find apps for Windows and Windows Phone from Aviation Supplies & Academics for your Instrument, Commercial and even Airline Transport Pilot knowledge exams. In all, there are 22 Prepware apps on Windows and Windows Phone.
In the months and years that followed my first takeoff, I’ve had many memorable flights. One such flight was in June 2013, when I flew from Honolulu International Airport (PHNL) to Kalaupapa Airport (PHLU) on the island of Molokai. It was the first time I’d ever flown more than a few miles over open water and you can’t help but be in awe of how beautiful the Hawaiian Islands are. On approach to the runway 05 at Kalaupapa, the scenery was breathtaking.
