Each week, we bring you a new app recommendation from our colleagues. This week’s Staff App Pick comes from David Chou, principal technology evangelist in Developer & Platform Evangelism at Microsoft.
As a parent with young children at home, I appreciate finding apps and games that are truly great for the kids. So, I was particularly delighted discovering Crayola Color, Draw & Sing in the Windows Store.
Like many official Crayola apps, Crayola Color, Draw & Sing is also a fun creativity app that enables kids to add color to a whimsical set of templates, using official Crayola colors as crayons, markers and paint buckets, plus a selection of animated stickers. What makes Crayola Color, Draw & Sing truly unique is the seamless and intuitive blend of popular children’s songs as part of the drawing experience.
When we start adding a color to a new drawing, an instrument also starts playing a part of the chosen song. And as we continue working on the drawing, each new color added to the canvas also adds a new instrument to the song! This combination provides an engaging way of building a drawing, and the reinforcing sense of accomplishment at completion, when all instruments are playing to a colorful picture.
The combination of art and music encourages use of more and different colors to complete a drawing, while the individual instruments subtly reveal how the different sounds and tunes play their roles in a song. This makes the creative drawing activities fun, immersive and, unexpectedly, educational.
Moreover, Crayola Color, Draw & Sing on Windows offers the exclusive feature of multi-player mode, where each player gets to draw and build on their own view of the same picture, together at the same time. This has become a popular parent and child activity at home, working together and seeing a picture come to life with vibrant colors and familiar music.
Crayola Color, Draw & Sing is a must-have for families with young children. It looks and works fantastically on large touch-screen displays, especially in multi-player mode. At the same time, the game provides an enriching and fun solo activity when the kids have the Windows tablet all to themselves.
