Get advance notice about August 2014 security updates

Today, the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) posted details about the August security updates.

If you have automatic updating turned on, most of these updates will download and install on their own. Sometimes you may need to provide input for Windows Update during an installation. In this case, you’ll see an alert in the notification area at the far right of the taskbar—be sure to click it.

In Windows 8, Windows will turn on automatic updating during setup unless you choose to turn it off. To check this setting and turn on automatic updating, open the Search charm, enter Turn automatic updating on or off, and tap or click Settings to find it.

The Microsoft Security Bulletin Advance Notification Service offers details about security updates approximately three business days before they are released. We do this to enable customers (especially IT professionals) to plan for effective deployment of security updates.

When I try to sign on to read my email I put in my email add and password and then it goes to a page where it says someone w/ _________ email address is trying to change or has requested a change in privacy settings. Then it asks you to pick either a phone number or other email address for them to send a code of some sort. Ive had my MSN email for 15 years so I no longer have those phone numbers or other email address so I have no option that I can choose to move forward through the process.  I can't get to my email because I don't have an option.  I'm probably not going to continue using MSN if you can't help me.

Got a call from a man with an India accent. He said he worked for Microsoft and my computer sent a message that my computer had downloaded a virus and it was going to shut down my computer in a few days and if I got on my computer he would tell where to go on the internet to solve the problem.I asked him if it was o.k for me to personally go to Microsoft and ask them what the problem was and he repeated what he was saying so I hung up.Don't know if what he was saying was true but would like to know why he would call  instead of emailing me.

Audrey, I had the same thing happen to me about a month ago. a man with an Indian accent advised me that my computer was infected and was infecting other computers and he wanted me to type in a code and then a few other details.  I hung up on him. He called me right back and said something to the effect that since I was not being compliant, 'they were going to shut me down".

I can not get any help for my computer. I have been shut down for 2 days. The message comes on my computer which says " we are over protective" Then says to type in a code which they said was sent to my son but my son did not receive a code. I have phoned him. No code is forth coming. Have I been hacked?? or is this truly from Microsoft Co.??? How do I get this Message off of my computer so that I can have my computer back??/

To ALL who receive Phone Calls from foreign accented Persons, Female and Male (with a common name like BOB). I get these calls approx. every 1 to 2 months and it started about a year ago. My Callers (who identify themselves as Microsoft and/or Windows Tech Employees) tell me that they are receiving Error Reports directly from my Computer and they could help me fix them. Of course I know this is not true (besides the fact that I worked in IT/Systems for a large Financial Institution and IBM for 25 years) and I would say to them "since you are receiving information from MY PC, what Windows Version am I running'? They could not tell me and would start their "tap dancing talking". I would then ask for their Phone number, so that I could call back, after I do some checking on them. They would give me a Number which can be reported to Microsoft, but usually it's a good number to a MS facility, which doesn't mean anything. By the way, Microsoft/Windows do not use these types of Business Practices (proactively calling Users, regarding a specific System issue or for ANY REASON). This also has been addressed and confirmed by me with the Microsoft Company. So if YOU receive Calls like mine or what has been reported previously, they cannot hurt you without Your help so, say nothing and HANG UP!!!
