Local news says, “Those calls are not coming from Microsoft”

Senior attorney for Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit (DCU), Richard Boscovich, appeared on Seattle’s NBC news last week to confirm that Microsoft will not cold call you to fix your computer.

If you’ve received a call from someone who claims to be from Microsoft and wants to fix your computer, hang up. You can also report these calls to the Federal Trade Commission.

LAST WEEK I RECEIVED A CALL FROM MICROSOFT TECH SUPPORT. HE WALKED ME THRU HOW TO GET INTO A LIST OF WARNINGS COMING FROM MY COMPUTER TO MICROSOFT. TOLD ME I COULD PURCHASE A PROGRAM TO DELETE ALL THE VIRUSES AND ERRORS FROM HIM. HES SUPPOSED TO CALL ME BACK NEXT WEEK FOR ME TO MAKE THE PURCHASE.  HOW CAN MICROSOFT KNOW WHAT ERRORS I HAVE IF I DO NOT REPORT THEM?

Just got a phone call from a very aggressive woman with a strong Indian accent who told me she was calling from the UK for Microsoft.  When I persisted on asking WHICH of my computers and WHICH email address she was talking about she got quite angry and belligerent so I hung up.  Then I went on you website and was glad I had hung up.  Thanks for posting this for us.

Saturday 21st May. Just had a phone call stating they were Microsoft and telling me my computer is corrupt and to turn it on. I said that I did not allow anyone on my system. The line went dead.

Rang 1471 and the call came from 025380202308. Have not rung back but if you can catch the B******* get him slung in goal.

How do these people get your phone number??? funny thing we just installed verizon fios and have had a ton of issues since we switched from comcast…so at first I thought maybe it was a "real" tech support..but the more he talked- it didn't make any sense at all? Why would Microsoft call me??  I told him I would have to verify with Microsoft before doing anything!  JERK!  Wish they could catch these people!

    Dear Sirs,

I received a phone call from India yesterday, totally unsolicited, from a Robert (last name not stated) who represented Microsoft and was directed to detect viruses in my computer.  I discovered that he was calling from India because of his accent.  He instructed me to click on the run icon and then to insert eventvwr into the run box.  He would check for viruses and then would provide technical support at a charge.  I did not insert eventvr and declined his offer.  While Robert was on line, could he have hacked into my computer?  Spending such time with Robert, could Robert have infected my computer via the simultaneous connection by phone line and eventvr?  I found the entire experience chilling.  And finally, how do I notify Microsoft of their representative's activity.

I have just received a phone call saying I had a trojan on my computer and they were ringing from windows support centre to help me, I asked for a phone number to ring to verify the call and they gave me a bogus number. They wanted to verify my customer licence ID with me.

    Very scary!

I've had 3 phone calls asking me to switch on my computer – I know it's a scam so I ask them for their phone no. to call back as I'm too busy at the moment. Last phone no. is 00442030262091.  Next time, I'll say I'm going to turn computer on, walk away and leave phone dangling for 10 mins. Hopefully I'll be costing them money by doing that and they'll give me a miss from now on, or I'll say No, I'm not buying your product, don't bother me again.

I received a call about this too and when I questioned him about which computer, he just continued to say 'the one with Windows'.  I didn't give him any info and finally hung up on him.  Sounds like they are calling all over the world.

These people phoned me yesterday June 13 2011. The hacked into my computer and told me I needed to pay them 299.00 to fixed it. If I didn't pay I would never be able to use a computer again….even if I purchased a new one. He said I had many errors on my computer although I've never reported any errors.

I too have had these Indian chappies phone me several times, even though i tell them i have no computer, I find it unbelievable that today after many years of warnings of scams people still fall for them, I have reported them but still they call.

These people are active in Australia too using local phone numbers. I had a call a month ago which was initially quite convincing; these guys know their patter. Fortunately I got a chance to google the website name that they were trying to get me onto and it screamed 'scam'. Had another call a couple of days ago – 8pm on a public holiday, would you believe – and gave them an ear full.
