Thin and lightweight Surface Pro 3 with 12-inch screen announced

The Surface Pro 3 –  the most powerful, thinnest and lightest Surface Pro yet – was announced Tuesday. It has a 12-inch screen, weighs just 1.76 pounds and is 0.36 inches thin. The Surface Pro 3 is both a “full PC and a brilliant tablet,” says Panos Panay, Microsoft corporate vice president for Surface Computing, who unveiled the new Surface at a live event in New York City.

The Surface Pro 3 is “just half the thickness of a MacBook Pro, and 30 percent thinner than an 11-inch MacBook Air,” Panay writes in a blog post.

The 12-inch ClearType Full HD screen has 2,160-by-1,440 resolution, and is 38 percent bigger than Surface Pro 2, with 50 percent more pixels. “Every screen is color calibrated at the factory, so you’ll see accurate, brilliant colors, great white points, and great contrast on every device,” Panay writes.

Pre-sale of the Surface Pro 3 starts Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. ET at Microsoftstore.com in most launch markets, at Microsoft retail stores and at select third-party retailers in the United States. It will be available for purchase in stores beginning June 20 in the U.S. and Canada.
