First Microsoft Innovation Center in the U.S. to Open in Miami

Visitors of the Microsoft Innovation Center in Miami get a sneak peek of the technology, tools, and services the facility will offer the community when it opens later this spring.

The following post is from Sanket Akerkar, Vice President of Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft.

On Friday, to kick-off Techweek Miami 2014, Microsoft formally announced plans to open the first U.S.-based Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC) in Miami.

Based in downtown Miami, the center will be a state-of-the-art facility that offers a comprehensive set of technology, tools and services to startups, governments, students, faculty and the greater Miami community to help foster innovation, collaboration and economic growth.

Developed and operated in partnership with Miami-Dade County, the City of Miami, Venture Hive and others, the Miami facility will be used to host technology trainings and workshops to help citizens learn more about technology, and to better grow and hone their IT skills for greater impact. It will also provide entrepreneurs, prospective startups and governments access to networking opportunities and potential talent for future job opportunities.

The Miami MIC will also serve as a gateway connecting the U.S. to the Latin America region, providing Latin American industries and businesses access to a pool of dependable and tech-savvy interns and potential full-time employees. It will also offer Miami’s growing tourism and travel industry access to this strong talent pool, and help attract other tourism-based businesses to open offices in the city.

County and city officials, including Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and City of Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado, both of whom joined Microsoft to announce the upcoming opening, agree that the Miami MIC will help showcase the city as one of the top technology centers in the country.

Currently, there are more than 100 MICs serving over 80 communities worldwide, including countries like Singapore, Uganda and Greece. For each MIC, Microsoft and a number of local partners work together to operate the facilities and design its programs and services to help accelerate technology advances and stimulate local economies.

Miami’s MIC will be the first of many MICs to open across the U.S. in the coming year, including one located in the Washington, D.C., area. These MICs will offer similar services and opportunities, helping each city transform and modernize to become healthier and more prosperous places to live and work.
