A closer look at the two-position kickstand in Surface 2

The Surface team on Wednesday shared a look at perhaps one of the most iconic features of Surface – the kickstand. It’s part of what makes Surface so versatile, and even more so with the new two-position kickstand in Surface 2. In the video above, Surface design lead Ralf Groene talks about what it took to make the kickstand work so flawlessly in two different positions, yet still “fit perfectly” into the device when not in use.

Surface fans can use the kickstand with a Type or Touch cover to treat their devices like laptops or adjust them to find the perfect viewing angle for movie watching – even in coach seating on a flight with the seat in front of you reclined, says Dan Laycock, senior manager for Microsoft Surface.

There’s even an app – the new Food & Drink app – that takes advantage of Surface’s built-in kickstand convenience. The app offers a hands-free mode that lets users wave their hand in front of the Surface to advance through the recipe, rather than touch the screen with sticky fingers.

Take a look at the video above to learn more about the engineering and design behind the kickstand, and get more perspective in this post on the Surface Blog.
