Suzy Amis-Cameron: Technology Can Help Young Children

Technology can help young children learn more about subjects that they naturally gravitate toward and are most interested in, said Suzy Amis-Cameron, who attended the final of the U.S. Imagine Cup in Washington, D.C., on Monday with husband and filmmaker James Cameron.

She said she wanted to hear from the students in the competition about their ideas for solving some of the world’s toughest problems, but that she’s specifically interested in using technology to help grade school-age children do better in schools in the U.S. and around the world.

Amis-Cameron is the co-founder of Muse Elementary School in the Los Angeles area, a school built on the principles of Reggio-inspired experienced learning. The school is using technology ranging from video conferencing to digital photography to video making in order to make it easier for children to teach themselves what they want to learn.

“They get real tools to work with that let them take learning a step further,” Amis-Cameron said, explaining that her school is particularly proud to be sharing lessons with schools across the United States and around the world. “These children are actually working together on projects in real time, using different languages.”

For example, kids in Georgia and Arizona went out and gathered biological samples from their local climates and shared them via a digital microscope with the students in her school in California. “They all get to see it together,” she said. “It’s quite amazing.”
