Weekend Reading: Microsoft’s Women Worth Watching, Glo, Moodle and Of Course Baseball

We aren’t quite sure if it is spring or winter here in Seattle.  The sun is shining and flowers blooming but yesterday we had snow falling too.   We aren’t sure if it is Spring or Winter but we do know it has been another interesting week at Microsoft, and here are some of the things you might have missed:

Women Worth Watching:  One of the great things about working at Microsoft is the chance to work with talented, smart and passionate people.  ZDNet’s Mary-Jo Foley shines a light on some of the brilliant women who work at Microsoft in her current series on Microsoft Women Worth Watching. Take a few minutes to read these pieces and meet some of the wonderful people we’re pleased to call colleagues.

Bing Photos for Keeps:  One of the really popular features of Bing is the daily photography that appears on the Bing homepage. Every day we see another amazing new photo, one that takes us to parts of the world most of us never will see otherwise. Now you can download some of the best Bing homepage photos to personalize your Windows 7 desktop. The Bing blog has details.  These pictures have the power to transport you mentally to places around the world without leaving your desk.  Given the snow in April here in Seattle that is no bad thing.

Business Intelligence: There is no doubt that Microsoft Office Excel is a powerful tool, but the Office team never seem to stop pushing to make it even more powerful and useful.  This week Information Week wrote about our efforts to harness the power and familiarity of  Excel with powerful tools such as SQL Server. The goal: business intelligence at their fingertips for the 500 million Excel users – “business intelligence for the masses” if you will.

Baseball on Bing:  In this part of the world the arrival of spring means baseball.  Bing makes it easy to stay in touch with the latest results and player news.  The Bing team walk you through it in their blog post.

MSN’s new lifestyle magazine:   Kick back, relax and enjoy a magazine experience right on the web.  MSN’s new site Glo brings the magazine experience to the web.  You can read more about it in the MSN team’s blog post or read enjoy the site itself.

Office and Education:  We’re pleased to be a big part of education around the world, and work hard to help teachers become more effective. This week we announced an Office plug-in for Moodle, an educational platform used by teachers around the world. With the plug-in, teachers can save Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents directly into Moodle, giving them new ways to engage with students.

Have a great weekend.
