Internet Freedom

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave an important and interesting speech this morning on the subject of Internet freedom and privacy.  This is a vital discussion and one we think about a great deal at Microsoft.  We strongly support Secretary Clinton’s belief that technology can play a critical role in helping meet basic human goals related to access to information, communications, civil engagement, and expanding mutual understanding.  We are committed to working in partnership with governments, industry partners, and stakeholders around the world to help protect freedom of expression and privacy, through efforts like the Global Network Initiative which Secretary Clinton mentioned in her speech.  In our view Internet freedom also means extending the transforming reach of technology to more of the world’s population, many of whom are currently left behind, and we continue to work in close partnership with others to help address this.

Microsoft Chief Research and Strategy Officer Craig Mundie has some more thoughts on Secretary Clinton’s remarks in a post on the Microsoft on the Issues blog.
